Maria Avram is a Senior Associate at Țuca Zbârcea & Asociații, mainly specialised in domestic and international arbitration, as well as in arbitration-related litigation matters.
Maria has counseled clients in complex disputes under the rules of arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce, Court of International Commercial Arbitration attached to the Romanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Court of Arbitration attached to the Bucharest Chamber of Commerce and Industry, as well as in ad hoc arbitrations, including under the UNCITRAL Rules, in a range of industries, such as construction, infrastructure, real estate and energy.
Maria has also covered a wide range of legal issues in the field of corporate and commercial law. She has advised businesses on day-to-day corporate operations, as well as in connection with matters arising out of their ongoing relationships with contractual partners or public authorities. Her experience also includes providing assistance in drafting, negotiating and amending a wide array of commercial agreements.

Relevant Matters:
- Member of the legal team representing a major contractor in the road and railway construction sector, part of an international group, in a successful arbitration under the rules of the Court of International Commercial Arbitration attached to the Romanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The dispute concerned claims of over EUR 60,000,000 arising out of the termination of the contract by the client, a significant part of which represented damages for loss of profits. Successfully assisted the client in obtaining financing from a third-party funder to cover arbitration costs.
- Member of the legal team representing the members of a joint venture led by a leading Italian construction company in two arbitration proceedings under the ICC Rules, in connection with claims for extension of time and financial compensation under two FIDIC contracts. The value of the claims in the two arbitration proceedings exceeds EUR 90,000,000.
- Member of the legal team representing a Black Sea shipyard in ICC arbitration proceedings concerning the early termination of a shareholders’ agreement and claims for damages arising from non-performance in excess of EUR 300,000,000.
- Member of the legal team representing the largest insurer in the field of motor liability in an ad hoc procedure under UNCITRAL arbitration rules concerning the client’s claims arising out of loan agreements, which were admitted in their entirety.
- Member of the legal team representing an independent Romanian oil and gas producer in a successful ICC arbitration arising from a joint operation contract for the exploitation of oil concessions in Romania.
- Member of the legal team assisting a major global HVAC distributor in connection with a wide range of legal issues regarding its corporate and commercial operations in Romania.
